Types of Fluency Disorders

There are two major types of fluency disorders: stuttering and cluttering. People are often more familiar with stuttering, which is the interruption of a person’s speech flow. Those who have a stuttering disfluency often repeat whole words (e.g., “But-but-but it was his fault”) or entire phrases (e.g., “And I was — And I was really disappointed”). Some also repeat syllables (e.g., “The d-d-dog is cute”) and prolong certain sounds (e.g., “Ssssssally is my friend”).

Cluttering, on the other hand, is characterized by issues in speech clarity. Usually, those who have cluttering disfluency are perceived to be talking at a rapid speech rate and/or have an irregular speech pattern (e.g., pausing in certain parts of their speech where pauses aren’t appropriate). They might also collapse the syllables of a word (e.g., “wuffel” instead of “wonderful”), omit the last syllable of a word (e.g., “televis” instead of “television”), and/or repeat the last syllable of a word (e.g., “bike-ike”).
